Sound and microphone over Remote Desktop

The RDP file plays your computer's sound on your own device and passes your microphone to the computer. Allow microphone access on your device if asked.

The RDP file you download from the portal is set up for both. Your computer's sound plays on your own device, and your device's microphone is passed through to the computer. There is nothing to turn on.

If the microphone does not work

Your own device may be blocking the Remote Desktop app.

  • On a Windows PC, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Microphone. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  • On a Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone. Turn on Windows App.

Close the Remote Desktop window and connect again afterward.

Check the program you are using as well. A calling app has its own microphone setting, so choose the Remote Desktop audio device there.

If you cannot hear anything

  1. Check the volume on your own device.
  2. Check the speaker icon on the Windows taskbar inside the computer.
  3. Download a new RDP file from the RDP and credentials tab, in case the old one was changed.

Check how the computer is set up

Company admins can read the settings on the computer's page.

  1. Click Computers in the sidebar.
  2. Click the computer's name.
  3. Find Sound and microphone on the Overview tab.
  4. Read the Remote Desktop file row.
  5. Click Check Windows to read the settings inside Windows. This changes nothing, and the computer must be running.

For Windows, Service running and Allowed are what you want to see. Service stopped or Blocked means Windows is the problem. Couldn't check means the computer may still be starting, so try again in a moment.
