Disconnect or shut down, what is the difference
Disconnecting leaves your computer on with your programs open. Shutting down turns it off and closes them. Neither one changes what you pay.

Disconnecting closes your view of the computer. Shutting down turns the computer off.
| Disconnect | Shut down | |
|---|---|---|
| The computer | Stays on | Turns off |
| Your open programs | Stay open and keep running | Close, so save your work first |
| Getting back | Connect again | Start it, then connect |
| Your files | Safe | Safe |
| What you pay | No change | No change |
How to disconnect
- In a browser session, click Disconnect in the bar above the screen, or close the tab.
- In Remote Desktop, close the window.
A long task, such as a report or a download, keeps running after you disconnect.
How to shut down
Use the menu on the Computers page. Read how to start, stop and restart.
Shutting down does not stop your charges. The only way to stop paying for a computer is to delete it, which removes everything on it. See what you still pay for.
