Connect with Remote Desktop on Windows

Download a small file from the portal, open it, and type the computer's password. Windows already includes the Remote Desktop app you need.

Remote Desktop opens your computer in its own full-screen window on your Windows PC. The app is already part of Windows.

The computer must be running.

  1. Click Computers in the sidebar.
  2. Find the computer and click Connect.
  3. Click Connect via RDP. The computer's RDP and credentials tab opens.
  4. Under Sign-in details, click the copy button beside Password.
  5. Click Download RDP file. Your current network address is added to the allowed list at the same time.
  6. Open the downloaded file.
  7. Click Connect in the Windows message that asks about the publisher.
  8. Paste the password when Windows asks for it, and click OK.
  9. Click Yes if Windows says it cannot verify the remote computer's identity.

Employees use the menu at the end of the computer's row, then Connect with the Remote Desktop app. The same details and download button are there.

Good to know

  • The password is never stored in the file, so Windows asks for it. You can tick Remember me on your own PC.
  • The username in the file starts with .\ before the name. Keep it. It tells Windows this is an account on that computer.
  • If you type the details by hand, use .\ plus the Username, or Windows may say your credentials did not work.
  • If the computer's address changes, the old file stops working. Download a new one. A static IP keeps the address the same.

If it will not connect

Download the RDP file again, from the network you are on now, so your address is added. Remote Desktop refuses addresses that are not on the list. If it still fails, read what to do when you cannot connect.
