Backup codes sign you in when you do not have your authenticator app. You get 10 when you turn the app on, and each one works once. They only come with the authenticator app, so you do not have any if you only use email codes.

Save them

The codes appear once, right after you turn on the app. Click Copy or Download, keep them somewhere other than your phone, and then click I saved my codes.

Use one

  1. Sign in with your email and password, or with Google.
  2. If the page offers a choice, click Use authenticator app.
  3. Click Use a backup code.
  4. Type the code, which looks like ABCD-EFGH, and click Verify code.

That code is now used up.

Check how many are left, or get new ones

  1. Click Settings in the sidebar, then Security.
  2. Look at the Backup codes row, which shows how many you have left.
  3. Click Create new codes.
  4. Type the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app and click Create new codes.
  5. Save the new codes and click I saved my codes.

Your old codes stop working as soon as you create new ones. They also stop working if you turn off the authenticator app.

Creating new codes needs a code from the app. If you have lost the app, see I lost my phone.
